Why It Matters
The Senate Judiciary Committee will consider five federal judge nominees on July 16 while continuing hearings on Todd Blanche's nomination to lead the Justice Department. The dual-track hearing reflects mounting pressure on Republicans over Blanche's nomination, with concerns about his approach to independence at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Blanche's Confirmation Prospects Remain Uncertain
Blanche's performance on the first day of hearings left central Republican concerns unresolved. Former Justice Department employees have focused on Blanche's treatment of the department's apolitical career workforce as a central concern in opposing his nomination. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) publicly opposed Blanche's confirmation, stating that Republican senators who vote to confirm Blanche are deluding themselves if they believe he will do anything but accelerate the weaponization of the justice system.
Blanche's prospects for confirmation were tepid but far from doomed ahead of the confirmation hearing. However, in his efforts to win over President Donald Trump, Blanche lost the support of some Republican senators whom he needs to secure confirmation.
Five Judicial Nominations on the Agenda
The committee will consider the nominations of Daniel Mack Traynor for United States circuit judge for the Eighth Circuit, Angela Veronica Colmenero for United States district judge for the Southern District of Texas, Kasdin Miller Mitchell for United States district judge for the Northern District of Texas, Michael C. Martin for United States district judge for the Eastern District of Michigan, and Antonio M. Pozos for United States district judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Hearing Details
The judicial nominations hearing is scheduled for Thursday July 16, at 5:00 PM in 216 Hart Senate Office Building. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, will oversee the meeting. The hearing will be followed by a continuation of hearings to examine the nomination of Blanche to be attorney general.
