FIU maintained $144,000 in total lobbying expenses for the second quarter, consistent with its spending in prior quarters. Chiocca's addition to the second quarter amendment represents a shift from the first quarter, when only Becerra was listed.
In April, FIU secured more than $25 million in federal support aimed at addressing hurricane resilience and semiconductor innovation. On August 31, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson also announced the release of more than $1 million in federal funding to FIU for environmental stewardship. Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23) has also met with the FIU President Jeanette Nuñez to discuss research projects at the university and expressed his willingness to help secure congressional funding.
The Agenda
According to the Brennan Center for Justice, the Trump administration's budget proposal sought cuts totaling $44 billion, or 22 percent, across all agencies engaged in scientific research. The American Federation of Teachers said last year that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act drives up loan repayment costs, slashes financial aid, and cuts support for public institutions. According to Kutak Rock LLP, the act represents a structural disruption in U.S. higher education characterized by federal funding retrenchment, demographic decline, eroding public confidence, and the disruptive potential of artificial intelligence.
In this context, FIU's lobbying has focused on appropriations bills covering defense, justice, science, energy, water, and labor, as well as education priorities including Pell Grant funding, STEM education, and college affordability.
