A Newcomer to Capitol Hill

Sonya Day has joined the House Foreign Affairs Committee Africa Subcommittee as a fellow and policy adviser, bringing new capacity to the panel as it manages an expanding portfolio of legislation focused on the continent. Day began her position oat the start of the year and works directly under Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA). The position is Day's first on Capitol Hill, but hardly her first experience in government.

Day previously worked as a member of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee in Alexandria, Virginia. Before that, Day worked at USAID for just over seven years, with a focus on political transition in Sudan. She holds a Master's degree in Conflict Studies and Human Rights from Utrecht University and a BA from the same university.

The Committee She Helps Run

The Africa Subcommittee currently holds 25 Africa-related bills across both chambers, ranging from initiatives promoting economic development to measures addressing regional security threats and humanitarian concerns.

Pending Africa-related measures in the subcommittee's jurisdiction include proposals on critical minerals development, countering forced recruitment by Russian forces, child soldiering's impact on U.S. national security, and the future of the African Development Foundation. The subcommittee also has resolutions pending on Ethiopia's regional role and potential recognition of Somaliland's independence.
