The Indian Gaming Association (IGA) is expanding its lobbying footprint, with three new firms added since April. The shift comes at a time when Congress is spending a considerable amount of time debating gambling laws, as online prediction markets become increasingly popular methods of betting.
The Big Picture
IGA engaged Mapetsi Policy Group LLC from January through July of this year, adding Red Maple Consulting LLC from April onward and Aquila Dorado Consulting LLC in July. A fourth firm, Milanovich Pinnacle LLC, was registered as a new client on July 31. The team includes Pete Kirkham, founder and president of Red Maple Consulting LLC. Kirkham brings prior congressional experience as former chief of staff for Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) and executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Tribal casino closures during and following the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in $4.4 billion in lost economic activity and $631 million in lost taxes and revenue to federal, state, and local governments. The Cherokee Nation alone faced $30 million to $40 million in monthly costs while operations shuttered. Many tribal casinos closed for the first time since opening in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Legislation Lobbied
The Indian Gaming Association has lobbied on tribal infrastructure revitalization, tribal sovereign immunity, and sports betting issues during 2019 and 2020.
