From Staff Assistant to Chief of Staff

James Johnson has taken on the role of Chief of Staff for Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-NJ-11), the Democrat representing New Jersey's 11th congressional district. The appointment marks Johnson's transition to a leadership position after more than a decade of work on Capitol Hill.

Johnson's congressional career began in 2013 as a Staff Assistant for Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY-20), a New York Democrat. Over the course of roughly three years in Tonko's office, Johnson progressed through roles including Legislative Correspondent and Press Aide, and Legislative Aide.

He served as Legislative Assistant before being promoted to Senior Legislative Assistant. In January 2021, Johnson assumed the position of Legislative Director for Pallone, a role he held for over four years, until April 2025. Most recently, Johnson served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Legislative Director for Pallone from May 2025 through May 2026, immediately before his appointment with Mejia.

Johnson holds a Master of Arts degree in international politics from Trinity College, which he earned during the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Position He Holds

Rep. Mejia serves on the House Small Business Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee, including its Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee. The committees cover jurisdictions that align with Johnson's documented policy expertise, particularly in areas related to commerce, law enforcement, and national security.
