Why It Matters

Evangelicals for a Better Future, an evangelical Christian super PAC, has reported $1 million in outside spending supporting James Talarico in the Texas Senate race. The group describes itself as mobilizing evangelical Christians around values of love, service, justice and grace and says it supports leaders who strengthen families and serve vulnerable communities. Its website specifically promotes Talarico as a candidate whose Christian faith informs his positions on public schools, affordable child care, paid family leave and prescription drug costs.

What It Spent

Evangelicals for a Better Future has reported two independent expenditures totaling $1 million supporting Talarico. One $400,000 expenditure on Sept. 1 and another $600,000 expenditure on Oct. 1. As of June 30, the committee reported $22,687.75 in receipts, $23,010.65 in disbursements, and $357.12 in cash on hand.

Who Funds It

Faith Voters for Good is listed as the committee's largest contributor through June 30, providing $17,494. Public Democracy Inc. contributed $5,000. Those contributions account for nearly all of the committee's reported receipts through June 30. Because the committee later reported $1 million in independent expenditures, future FEC reports will be needed to identify the additional funding behind that spending and determine whether its donor profile changed.

The Ad Buy

The committee reported an estimated $400,000 expenditure to Digital Strategies on Sept. 1 for a digital ad buy and production supporting Talarico. On Oct. 1, it reported another estimated $600,000 expenditure to Digital Strategies Inc. for a digital ad buy supporting Talarico. Together, the two transactions account for the committee's identified $1 million in spending.
