Why It Matters
The Army activated the 4th Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF) at Fort Carson, CO, on Oct. 8, bringing the force to nearly 2,100 soldiers, according to a new Congressional Research Service (CRS) report. Four of the five planned MDTFs have now been activated; only the 5th, planned for Fort Bragg, NC, lacks an activation date.
A decision by the administration on May 1 to remove 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany has put the deployment of the 2nd MDTF's long-range fires battalion, previously designated as European-aligned and due later this year, at risk of cancellation.
The Army reportedly plans to move hundreds of multi-domain troops from Germany to South Korea, though the Pentagon has not confirmed the Korea move.
The Big Picture
Congress has expressed concern about the military threat posed by Russia and China. The Army describes the MDTF as the organizational centerpiece of its effort to operate across air, land, water, space, cyber and information domains.
In January, the Army created Multi Domain Command Europe (MDC-E) by merging the 56th Artillery Command with the 2nd MDTF, and separately announced plans to merge the 1st MDTF with the 7th Infantry Division to form Multi Domain Command Pacific.
The 2nd MDTF's long-range fires battalion had been designated as European-aligned and was due to deploy later this year. The CRS report says that, reportedly based on the May 1 troop-reduction decision, one full brigade will leave Germany, and that fires battalion will be cancelled, though specific units were not identified.
The Bottom Line
Congress faces unresolved oversight questions on three fronts: whether MDTFs played a role in Operation Epic Fury and ongoing Middle East operations; how a possible cancellation of the 2nd MDTF's long-range fires battalion would affect support to U.S. European Command and NATO; and whether Army thinking about MDTFs has changed since the 2024 force-structure white paper. The 5th MDTF, planned for Fort Bragg, has a target of fiscal 2028 for full operational status but no activation date.
