Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL-5) used his public platform this week to mark National Purple Heart Day, highlighting the sacrifices of wounded and fallen service members in a district with a significant military presence.

Rutherford represents a Jacksonville-area district with several major military installations. Naval Station Mayport is one of three major Navy installations in the Jacksonville area and is home to the Navy’s 4th Fleet, while Naval Air Station Jacksonville is the largest installation in Navy Region Southeast.

Rutherford also serves on the House Appropriations Committee and its Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, which oversees funding for military construction and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

On Aug. 7, Rutherford posted to X to observe National Purple Heart Day, writing, “Today, on Purple Heart Day, we recognize the brave servicemen and women wounded or killed serving our country. May their sacrifices never be forgotten.”

The post came on the anniversary of Gen. George Washington’s creation of the Badge of Military Merit on Aug. 7, 1782. The Army later revived the decoration in 1932 as the Purple Heart.

President Trump also issued a proclamation designating Aug. 7 as National Purple Heart Day and called on Americans to honor Purple Heart recipients and veterans.

Rutherford’s focus on military and veterans issues aligns with his committee assignments. His Appropriations subcommittee has jurisdiction over military construction programs and the Department of Veterans Affairs, giving him a role in federal spending decisions affecting military installations and veterans programs.

Rutherford’s reelection campaign also drew attention this week ahead of Florida’s Aug. 18 Republican primary. Florida Politics reported that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce endorsed Rutherford over conservative radio host Mark Kaye, citing the incumbent’s record on business issues. The Chamber said Rutherford had supported policies aimed at lowering taxes, reducing regulations and expanding domestic energy production.

Rutherford also appeared on News4JAX’s “This Week in Jacksonville” as early voting got underway. The interview focused on his work in Congress and federal funding and projects benefiting the Jacksonville area, while Kaye appeared separately to make his case for replacing Rutherford in Congress.

The primary gives Rutherford a test from within his own party as he seeks another term representing Florida’s 5th District.
