Why it Matters
The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) has scheduled a closed briefing for Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at a moment when congressional hearing intelligence demands are running high. Senators are pressing for answers on election security ahead of the 2026 midterms, a CIA charge involving a request for $40 million in gold bars has surfaced in public reporting, and the intelligence community's own threat assessment warns of a rapidly expanding missile threat to the U.S. homeland.
The Big Picture
Sen. Mark Warner, the committee's Vice Chair, is among the senators who signed a letter demanding an all-senators briefing on election security threats before June 25, 2026. The letter, also signed by Sens. Alex Padilla and Gary Peters, explicitly tied the request to threats facing the 2026 midterms. Warner's dual role, signatory of that demand and Vice Chair of the SSCI, puts the committee squarely in the middle of that pressure.
Separately, a CIA official identified as David J. Rush has been accused of requesting $40 million in gold bars and foreign currency from the U.S. government between November 2025 and March 2026. That allegation has not been confirmed as the subject of the June 17 briefing. Still, the SSCI holds direct oversight authority over the CIA.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, under DNI Tulsi Gabbard, released the 2026 Annual Threat Assessment earlier this year, warning that missile threats to the U.S. homeland could expand to more than 16,000 by 2035.
The Bottom Line
Sen. Tom Cotton chairs the 17-member committee. The panel's prior open business included a June 2, 2026 confirmation hearing for Dr. Roger Mason, nominated to lead the National Reconnaissance Office, and Mr. Michael Vance, nominated as Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research, at which Cotton delivered opening remarks and conducted questioning.
The briefing will be held at 219 Hart Senate Office Building at 3:00 PM.
