From Committee Clerk to Senior Adviser
Tyler Owens has taken on a new role as Senior Adviser and Counsel in the office of Sen. John Thune, the South Dakota Republican. Owens began his position on March 1, 2026. He brings substantial experience to the Thune office, having accumulated more than 16 years of congressional service across multiple Senate committees and offices. His background includes extensive work on the Senate Appropriations Committee, where he served as a professional staff member and clerk for three different Congressmen from 2009 to 2021.
Before his Appropriations Committee work, Owens served as senior counsel to Sen. Robert Bennett (R-UT) a Utah Republican, in 2009, and previously worked as counsel to Bennett beginning in 2006. His earliest congressional experience came on the House Natural Resources Committee, where he interned from January 2001 to May 2001 and then served as a legislative staff member from January 2002 to June 30, 2003.
Owens holds a JD degree from George Mason University School of Law and a bachelor's from Utah State University.
The Office He Represents
Thune maintains positions across several major committees including the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, the Senate Budget Committee, the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, the Senate Finance Committee, and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Owens will play a significant role in maintaining Thune's political reach as the 119th Congress enters its final months.
