A National Security-Focused Portfolio

Ashley Satterfield has joined the House Republican Whip's office as National Security Adviser, according to congressional records. Satterfield, who most recently served as Military Legislative Assistant to Rep. Dale W. Strong (R-AL-5), started in the new role on May 1.

In her new position, Satterfield will cover armed forces and national security, crime and law enforcement, international affairs, and veterans affairs for Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN-6), who serves as House Republican Whip.

Emmer has been active on legislation touching several of those areas. His Veteran Burial Timeliness and Death Certificate Accountability Act would require VA physicians and nurse practitioners to certify veteran deaths within 48 hours of learning about them, addressing reported cases where delays stretched up to eight weeks and blocked survivors from accessing benefits. The bill is currently in committee. His Firearm Due Process Protection Act of 2025, which would expand judicial remedies for individuals who face extended delays on firearm transfers, has advanced to the floor.

Background Built on Military Legislative Work

Satterfield brings six years of congressional experience to the role, with a consistent focus on defense and national security issues.

Before joining Strong's office, she served as a Military Legislative Assistant to Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) from late 2022 into early 2023, having previously worked in Tuberville's office as a Legislative Correspondent starting in January 2021. Earlier in her career, she held Legislative Correspondent and Staff Assistant roles in the office of Rep. Steven M. Palazzo (R-MS-4), and interned for both Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL-5) and Rep. Robert B. Aderholt (R-AL-4). She holds a bachelor's degree in human resources management and personnel administration from Auburn University.

Her most recent position with Strong aligned closely with the work she'll be doing for Emmer. During her time in Strong's office, the Alabama Republican pushed legislation including the SHIELD Against CCP Act, which passed the House and was referred to the Senate, establishing a DHS working group to counter threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party, and the Research Security and Accountability in DHS Act, which passed 410-1 and requires DHS to develop policy for safeguarding research and development from unauthorized access.

Hearings Ahead

Satterfield steps into the role as the House Foreign Affairs Committee, on which Emmer sits, has a full schedule of hearings relevant to her portfolio.

A hearing on Securing NATO's Eastern Frontier: Assessing the Strategic Landscape in the Baltic Region is scheduled for May 14. The committee held a hearing on Orbits of Influence: Emerging Threats to U.S. Space Security and Foreign Policy Implications on April 29, and earlier this year, examined Advancing National Security Through Public Diplomacy and Securing the Future: Arms Control and International Security for the Modern Age.
