Jade Bennett has moved up in Sen. Chris Van Hollen's (D-MD) Maryland Senate office, taking on the role of Correspondence Assistant starting May 1. The congressional staff movement marks a promotion from her previous role as Staff Assistant, a position she held in the same office for two years.
Bennett joined Van Hollen's office in May 2024 as a Staff Assistant after a brief internship in the office of Rep. David Scott (D-GA-13) earlier that year. She holds a bachelor's degree in international relations and affairs from Georgia Southern University, earned between 2020 and 2023.
No specific policy areas are listed for her new role. Correspondence Assistant positions are typically administrative, managing constituent communications rather than driving legislative work.
A Senator in the News
Bennett's move comes as Van Hollen has drawn considerable attention beyond the committee room. In April 2025, he traveled to El Salvador to visit Kilmar Ábrego García, a Maryland resident deported by the Trump administration despite a court order blocking his removal. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele publicly mocked the visit on social media, while Van Hollen disputed characterizations of the trip.
Earlier, in November 2024, Van Hollen backed Senate resolutions aimed at blocking U.S. arms sales to Israel, drawing attack ads from AIPAC and putting him at odds with the Biden administration.
