Why It Matters
The Office of Isotope Research and Development and Production (IRP), within the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science, is the sole domestic supplier for hundreds of isotopes used in medical diagnostics, cancer treatment, national security, and industrial manufacturing. A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report published June 23, 2026, and publicly released July 23, 2026, found that IRP has not systematically assessed demand or aligned production to meet it, and has not developed timely actions to mitigate risks to isotope production and supply chains.
The Big Picture
Many isotopes are rare or too expensive or technically difficult for private industry to produce profitably, making IRP the only viable domestic source, and the demand is growing. IRP currently assesses market needs on a case-by-case basis and manually tracks interactions with customers and industry. A university production site representative told GAO that "clearer market analysis or forecasting would have enabled earlier production preparations for a critical isotope with imminent supply failure," according to the report.
Between fiscal years 2020 and 2025, IRP made over 7,700 isotope shipments, most for medical purposes. GAO issued four recommendations to DOE's Office of Science, and the the Office of Science agreed with all four.
GAO's four recommendations direct the Director of the Office of Science to: develop a mechanism to systematically assess demand and address isotopes in short supply; establish a statutorily required advisory committee to assess isotope supply and demand; mitigate risks to isotope production and supply chains with identified actions and time frames; and establish a means of communicating supply chain risks and mitigation plans to affected customers. All four recommendations remain open, with no actions yet taken or planned as of the report's public release.
