Why It Matters
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee's Subcommittee on Government Operations will hold a hearing on Wednesday, July 15 to examine emerging fraud threats as Americans face record financial losses from scams.
Americans lost a record $16 billion to fraud in 2025, a 25% increase from the previous year. Government imposter scams alone rose 40% year over year, with criminals spoofing toll programs and other federal services. The hearing comes as federal prosecutors continue major enforcement efforts, charging 455 defendants in June in connection with alleged health care fraud schemes involving $6.5 billion in fraudulent claims.
The hearing reflects broader bipartisan concern over fraud prevention and enforcement. The subcommittee previously held a related April hearing on fraud in state-administered federally funded programs, and Chair Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) has announced additional hearings examining tools to detect and prevent fraud in federal programs.
The Escalating Fraud Takedown
The hearing coincides with significant enforcement activity. On June 24, the Department of Justice announced its 2026 National Health Care Fraud Takedown, charging 455 defendants, including 90 physicians and other licensed medical professionals. The cases underscore the scale of fraud Congress is preparing to examine.
