From Legislative Correspondent to Legislative Aide

Mika Alvarez has joined the office of Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) as a legislative aide, handling a broad portfolio that spans civil rights and liberties, crime and law enforcement, emergency management, government operations, guns, health, law and judiciary, and Native American issues. The Nevada senator's staff movement is an internal promotion. Alvarez had served as a legislative correspondent in Rosen's office since February 2023, stepping into the legislative aide role on May 1, 2026.

Before joining Rosen's office, Alvarez worked for Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), first as a staff assistant from June to December 2021, then as a scheduler and policy associate from January 2022 through February 2023. Alvarez also interned in Rosen's office in the fall of 2019. Alvarez holds a Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy, earned between 2021 and 2024.

What Rosen Is Working On

The Senate legislative aide appointment comes as Rosen is advancing several bills that fall squarely within Alvarez's portfolio.

The most advanced is the Transportation Security Administration Pay Act of 2026, which has been placed on the Senate Legislative Calendar. The bill would provide continuing appropriations for TSA pay and operations amid a partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown.

Also moving is the FORGOTTEN Veterans Act of 2025, which was ordered favorably reported by the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee in March. The bill would expand presumptions of toxic exposure for service members who served at the Nevada Test and Training Range and establish eligibility for disability compensation for certain conditions.

Other introduced legislation includes the Extreme Heat Emergency Act of 2025, which would classify extreme heat events as major disasters under federal law, unlocking disaster relief funding. On Native American issues, Rosen has introduced the Truckee Meadows Public Lands Management Act, which would transfer land to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, and Washoe Tribe, and the Pershing County Economic Development and Conservation Act, which includes a land transfer to the Lovelock Paiute Tribe.
