Meg Louwagie, a congressional staff veteran with nearly 19 years of House experience, has joined Rep. Michelle Fischbach's office as a senior outreach representative, effective May 1.

Congressional Staff Career Spans Nearly Two Decades

Louwagie's move from a long career under a Democratic lawmaker to a Republican office in the same geographic district is notable. She spent more than 17 years as a staff assistant for Rep. Collin C. Peterson, the Democrat who held the seat before Fischbach flipped it. Before Peterson, Louwagie served briefly from 2001 to 2002 as a district representative for the Republican Rep. Mark Kennedy in Minnesota's 6th District.

Louwagie holds a bachelor's degree in public relations, advertising and applied communications from Southwest Minnesota State University.

What Fischbach's Office Is Working On

The Rep. Fischbach office has been active across a range of legislative priorities in the 119th Congress. Among the most advanced is the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, which passed the House on January 21, 2026, on a 215-209 vote and was received by the Senate on January 26. The bill would authorize states to use Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funds for pregnancy centers that offer resources including prenatal education, counseling, and material support. Other legislation Fischbach has sponsored includes:

  • The Investing in Rural America Act of 2025, currently in committee consideration, which would allow Farm Credit System institutions to finance essential community facility projects in rural areas including healthcare, public safety, and utility services.
  • The Protecting Rural Seniors' Access to Care Act, which would block federal minimum staffing mandates for nursing homes and instead establish an advisory panel focused on the rural nursing home workforce.
  • The Habitat Enhancement Now Act, which would establish competitive grant programs to boost migratory waterfowl populations in the prairie pothole region, allocating $3.5 million annually from fiscal years 2026 through 2030.
  • The Federal Funds Whistleblower Protection Extension Act, which would extend legal protections to state and local government employees who report misuse or fraud involving federal money.

Fischbach's communications record reflects consistent engagement on agriculture, water infrastructure, and fiscal policy, areas central to her rural western Minnesota district.

Congressional Staff Role Comes With Active Committee Calendar

Fischbach sits on several high-profile committees, including the House Agriculture Committee, the House Ways and Means Committee, the House Rules Committee, the House Budget Committee, and the House Judiciary Committee, giving Louwagie's outreach role a broad institutional footprint.

On the committee calendar, the Ways and Means Tax Subcommittee has a hearing scheduled for May 22 on working families' tax cuts. The Agriculture Committee held a markup of the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 on April 21, and the Ways and Means Committee convened a full committee hearing with health system CEOs on April 28. Fischbach chairs the House Rules Subcommittee on Rules and Organization of the House, adding another layer of institutional responsibility to the office that Louwagie is joining.
