Why It Matters
NC First PAC, a Republican-aligned super PAC, has directed all its reported spending toward opposing Democrat Roy Cooper in North Carolina's U.S. Senate race, where he faces Republican Michael Whatley.
The spending places the committee on Whatley's side of the open-seat contest to succeed retiring Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC). Its exclusively anti-Cooper spending strategy focuses on weakening the Democratic nominee rather than promoting Whatley through direct candidate support. The committee is one of several conservative outside groups working against Cooper as the Nov. 3 general election approaches.
What It Spent
Through Oct. 14, the committee reported raising $1.36 million, spending $66,000 and holding $1.29 million in cash. That financial period ended before the Oct. 19 independent expenditure against Cooper.
Who Funds It
Securing American Greatness Inc. was NC First PAC's largest listed organizational contributor, giving $1 million. Individual donor Divyesh Patel contributed $100,000, while Ronnie Cameron, John Childs, and Marlene Ricketts each contributed $50,000.
Charlotte Pipe & Foundry Company contributed $25,000, while Probity International Corporation and RJC Victory Fund, a super PAC, each contributed $18,000.
Through Oct. 14, NC First PAC reported $1.36 million in receipts, $65,796 in disbursements, and $1.29 million in cash on hand. The FEC identifies Whatley Victory Committee as the committee's connected organization, a disclosed registration relationship that does not, by itself, establish coordination with Whatley's campaign.
The Ad Buy
Strategic Media Placement received $1.2 million on Oct. 19 for a media buy opposing Roy Cooper. The purchase came 15 days before the Nov. 3 general election.
